Packaging is in the spotlight as never before. In November 2008, Amazon announced its Frustration-Free Packaging initiative. Frustration Free Packaging is a large scale program designed to -

  • Employ recycled packaging materials
  • Eliminate excess packaging
  • Eliminate secondary packaging, especially separate shipping boxes
  • Employ easy opening packages that require no knives or tools

The program has gained a lot of steam in recent months, presenting a challenge and an opportunity to merchandisers of consumer products. Amazon now has a listing of products that use Frustration Free Packaging, and actively solicits user feedback on packaging – a strong influencer for potential customers.

There is no question that U.S. consumers place a high value on eco friendly packaging and safe, easy to open packages. When a retailer with the market power of Amazon draws attention to these issues, their importance will grow even larger.

Frustration Free Packaging Is an Opportunity

To date, 30 Amazon vendors and 350 products employ Frustration Free Packaging – a fraction of Amazon’s total offering. There is still time to get into the program early and win new customers.

For manufacturers of consumer packaged goods (CPG) that do not sell through Amazon, opportunities exist as well. The Frustration Free Packaging initiative will change the mindset of consumers, making packaging a key buying consideration regardless of where products are purchased.
