Although corrugated shipping boxes are used the world over, they are not always the ideal packaging solution. From the standpoint of cost, productivity, and sustainable packaging, corrugated trays with shrink overwrap can often be a superior secondary packaging approach.

Trays have become extremely popular in the food and beverage sector. Products such as bottled water, soft drinks, snack foods, and bulk packaged processed foods commonly use trays, and although the packaging method encountered initial resistance from consumers, it is now broadly accepted. Trays are also widely used for the packaging of medical and pharmaceutical products, industrial parts and components, electronic devices, and much more.

What Drives Corrugated Tray Packaging?

  • Large Retailers. Wal Mart and others have pushed their suppliers aggressively to reduce packaging materials.
  • Sustainable Packaging. Trays eliminate two-thirds of the material used to make a comparable corrugated box – or more. This source reduction has a major positive environmental impact.
  • Cost. Generally, the combined cost of a tray and overwrap is less than that of a comparable corrugated container.
  • Visibility. Making products visible for inspection and to consumers carries a variety of quality control and marketing advantages.
  • Productivity. If boxes are being packed manually or semi-automatically, fully automated tray forming and packing automation will greatly increase throughput. Productivity gains can be realized even when box erecting and sealing are fully automated.
