Avoid the Temptation to Under Spend on Packaging Equipment
When shopping for machinery, most of us are tempted to seek out the best deal, to hunt for the bargain. This applies to packaging equipment as well as automobiles and lawnmowers. However, in many applications, the more expensive packaging machine turns out to be the real bargain. An easy way to illustrate this is by looking at stretch wrappers.
Consider a hypothetical distribution center that spends $100,000 per year on hand applied stretch wrap film.
By purchasing a $7,000 core brake stretch wrapper, the firm could expect a reduction in film expense of $25,000 per year.
By purchasing a $28,000 power pre-stretch stretch wrapper, the firm could expect a reduction in film expense of $50,000 per year.
The ROI on the more expensive stretch wrapper is faster, and the total savings on film is significantly greater. In addition, the lifespan of the more expensive machine may be greater as well. If the core brake machine remains in service for 5 years, it will generate a lifetime film savings of $125,000. If the pre-stretch machine reamins in service for 7 years, it will generate a lifetime film savings of $350,000.
This example is greatly simplified, but serves to illustrate an important point – to find the true packaging solution, it’s necessary to look beyond the purchase price of the equipment and in particular, evaluate the machine’s impact on the associated packaging material usage.
