Labeling for Order Fulfillment

June 10, 2010

Package labeling is an important and sometimes complicated aspect of packaging fulfillment. Labels are used for a variety of purposes, including -

  • Product Identification
  • Tamper Evidence Packaging
  • Product Dating
  • Branding
  • Warning Messages
  • Shipping and Delivery Information
  • Order Tracking
  • Barrier Protection
  • Portion Control / Dosing Information

To further complicate matters, labeling can be accomplished through a wide variety of technologies -

  • Inkjet Printing
  • Laser Labels
  • Litho Labels
  • Thermal Transfer
  • RFID
  • Barcoding / UPC Labeling

QR Code

An emerging technology of great interest is QR Code product identification. QR, or quick response codes, can be used for product tracking and product identification, and are compatible with mobile phone devices. Mobile phone users can scan a QR Code and be taken to a Web page where product information can be viewed.

Pioneer’s order fulfillment capabilities includes expertise in old and new labeling technologies. Labeling is an area of fulfillment where too much specialization is limiting. Depending on your application and how products are handled internally and through the distribution stream, some labeling approaches will be far more efficient than others, and the most efficient is not always the newest.

Our design team works with clients to develop labels that serve as many purposes as possible. For instance, a label created primarily for product dating can also carry a strong branding and sales message. Combining goals is important in many of the industries we serve, including medical / pharmaceutical packaging, food processing, wine and other beverage bottling, and solar industry products.

If you’re not sure the labeling technology you’re using now is the right one for your present – or future – needs, please contact us for an application review.
