Packaging for Solar Companies, Part 2

The solar industry is extremely strong and diverse in Arizona, with firms manufacturing a wide variety of products, including components for solar power generation, energy efficient products of all kinds, solar cooking products, solar construction and building products, components for wind power generation, and solar water heating. This is the first in a series of posts highlighting packaging topics of special interest to solar companies.

Solar Companies and the Need for Source Reduction

Few industries emphasize environmental stewardship and sustainability as strongly as the solar industry, especially here in Arizona. Thus, it is natural and very important for manufacturers and distributors of solar products to factor sustainability into their packaging materials and packaging equipment decisions. One dimension of sustainable packaging that has a positive cumulative impact on the environment – as well as on the bottom line – is source reduction. We work with solar companies on a regular basis to implement packaging solutions that enable them to package better with less. Here are a few examples.

Custom Corrugated Box Designs. With space efficient design and high recycled content box board, eco friendly primary and secondary corrugated containers provide superior protection and reduce the amount of material injected into the corrugated recycling stream.

Automatic Case Sealing. Manually applied carton sealing tape tends to result in overuse. A case sealing machine ensures that a predetermined amount of tape is applied to every shipping carton. Moreover, automated carton sealing often facilitates the use of narrower and lighter duty tapes, without compromising package integrity.

A stretch wrap machine not only reduces waste significantly, it produces a more secure and attractive palletized load. Our stretch wrap equipment is manufactured by the industry leader, Lantech. For more on how Lantech is leading sustainable change, read SustainabilityTechnical Feasibility: How Doing the Right Thing Makes Cents. An excerpt:

“[Lantech Chairman, Pat] Lancaster says since 1975, when about two pounds of film was used to contain a load, the requirement has dropped to about a quarter pound per pallet. Lantech’s new, no-film-break technology is the latest example of getting more by using less.”

In general, solar companies can best accomplish source reduction by taking a strategic approach. We recommend starting the process with a comprehensive packaging audit to identify the most promising and high impact targets, and begin developing alternatives. Please contact us to learn more.
